Since we first opened the Novice Lounge for soaring, the hit rate on the ESL site has jumped quite a bit.

However we need your help to keep the area rich and interesting so that we can attract the attention of the new flyers. This will naturally lead to more participation in contest flying and, in particular, ESL contests as people get to know you through your posts.

There are a wide variety of topics posted in the Novice Lounge. Please take a moment and survey the list. It would be very valuable for you to post comments, suggestions or amendments to the current posts so that new flyers can see a wider variety of view points.

I have almost nothing on hand launched and discus launched gliders. How about an introductoy post on the topic. Someone start it and others can join in. I know there are a lot of you who enjoy these planes. Let's help build interest in this type of flying.

Please feel free to create new topics and share your knowledge, with a focus on new flyers. It can be on what planes or radios might make good starting points. Certainly a new flyer does not have to buy an Icon or a Pike to get started. But a good recommendation on a low cost first plane that can start the path would be helpful.

Is a Spirit RES or Spirt Elite full house a valid start? These planes are inexpensive and are available as kits or ARF and the Spirit RES is available RTF. What would you recommend to a new flyer on a budget?

Perhaps you could share your journey in learning to become a contest flyer. What plane got you started and what came after that? Can someone fly in an ESL contest in Novice or Sportsman with a RES plane? How about Expert?

What would you consider the minimum feature set for a Novice/Sportsman to look for in a radio. We can't all afford a 9303 or an Evo or a 14 MZ. What suggestions can you make for more budget minded radios or minimum feature sets. A Hitec Optic 6 has some sailpalne mixes. How about a JR 7202? An Airtronics RD6000. Maybe a Polk Tracker III? What's your budget recommendation?

Crow is great but flaps or spoilers with elevator compensation should be good enough. Right? Is aileron differential vital or just helpful. Is manual mixing of rudder to ailerons all that hard?

One of my fellow club members just put up a 3M Compulsion and will fly it on a Hitec Flash 5SX. Certainly not a contest radio but he can fly the plane and work on his skills. This is an upgrade from an Easy Glider. First the plane, then the radio.

New flyers are hungry for your help. If they get to know you through your posts they may be open to your invitation to their participation in our contests. It is a lot easier to come to your first contest if you feel you will be seeing at least one friend.

I can put content on the site, but it is the active conversations and opening up of the discussions that will draw people to our site. And it is you, your talent and your helping hand that will bring in new flyers to the Eastern Soaring League.

Have a look at the Novice Lounge.

Thought you might be interested to know that the Novice Lounge has been a pretty active reference source for sailplane pilots.

Since we opened it, the articles have been viewed around 40,000 times. Hopefully some of these people have decided to look further into the Eastern Soaring League and some will join our contests.

Perhaps you have some knowledge to share. Take a look, pay the Novice Lounge a visit. You are encouraged to add your comments, your insights and your experience to the articles. Help new sailplane pilots get off to a good start and, perhaps, help the ESL grow.

Best regards,
Ed Anderson
