This will be a electric launched thermal duration soaring contest flown under AMA 2017 rules for Altitude Limited Electric Soaring, ALES.
Contest results will be reported to both the Eastern Soaring League and the ALES League.
All Expert and Sportsman gliders will require an ALES device set to 200 meters. 4-27-17 - See update about Novice pilots below.
If you are not familiar with ALES devices you can read more about them here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2147170&highlight=ALES+Device
Landing tapes will be 5 meters, 50 point max, incremented at 5 points per 1/2 meter.
A maximum registration of 40 pilots has been set to insure plenty of room for everyone to fly and land with no overlap of landing circles. Based on registration there will be no more than 4 flight groups per round.
You can learn more about the club and the flying field at www.lisf.org
Soft drinks and water will provided as part of pilot registration.
Lunch will be available each day for an additional $7.
Weather looks good for practice Friday afternoon. Field will open at Noon.
4-27-17 - Update on Novice pilots.
In order to open this up to as many people as possible the following change is being made in relation to Novice pilots only.
If you have a Radian, Radian Pro or Radian XL with stock motor and prop, you can fly Novice class without an ALES device. We know these gliders can not exceed 200 meters in 30 seconds in stock form.
Let me make this even easier. If you have an e-glider that you are sure will not exceed 200 meters in 30 seconds AND if you can make it to practice on Friday, between Noon ad 5 pm, I will offer to qualify it for the Novice class.
We will fly Expert Class, Sportsman Class and Novice Class.
Expert and Sportsman awards to 3rd place. Registration $20 per day. Type of awards to be announced.
All Novice pilots will receive a certificate. Novice fly FREE. Novice scores will not be reported to ESL or the ALES League.
For GPS and MapQuest users, the address for the field entrance is 25 Southwoods Road, Syosset, NY 11791.
General Directions:
Long Island Expressway (Rt 495) Northern State or Southern State Parkway to Route 135 North, the Seaford Oysterbay Expressway.
Take this to the next to the last exit, Exit 14E onto Jericho Tpk East (Rt 25)
Go approximately 1 mile then turn left onto South Woods Road, just past the golf course.
Go approximately 1 mile, pass Syosset HS on the left, then watch for the sports field on the right.
Turn into the sports field parking lot, on the right and drive all the way to the back, along the right side and drive through the orange gate onto the dirt road.
Drive very slowly as there are hikers and bikers using the same road.
At the end of the road is the flying field. Drive along the edge to join the other cars parked along the perimeter. But sure to park 10 feet back from the tall grass and do not drive through the tall grass.
This will be flown as two 1 day contests so you can fly one or both days.
There will be a police requested no-fly zone at the West tree line bordering the sports fields. As the fields are normally filled with children playing baseball and soccer this is safety request. Flying to the West in the corners and not over the sports fields will be permitted.
We have a large field with lots of overfly space over open woods so this should not be a concern.
