All four winches were rebuilt with new brushes and freshly turned armatures. The ESL owns a total of 11 armatures for the four winches and all 11 of these armatures were sent to the shop to be turned. This cost $80.00 for all 11.
Total cost to rebuild each motor is just the cost to turn the armature (about $7.50 in this case)plus the cost for a set of brushes (about $5.00). Brushes are bought in bulk at the armature shop.
I decided to try out the old winch batteries at the first ESL contest of the season and see if they were still good enough to use. I did not know of a way to test them short of trying them out at an actual contest.
