Timekeeper's Report by Ed Anderson
This year the Long Island Silent Flyers chose to move the June contest to the Daniel Boone Homestead to see if it would be more attractive to pilots, drawing a larger participation than we have gotten on Long Island. The registration for the contest was 21 pilots which, by current standards, was quite good. However, Mother Nature may have felt that that was too many as we were faced with stormy forecasts for Saturday that may have frightened away a few. The final pilot count for Saturday and for Sunday was 15.
LISF wishes to thank Steve Lucke, who acts as our local liaison to the Daniel Boone site. Steve opened the field for Practice on Friday. Frankly I dont know how the ESL would run without the energy and dedication of Steve. We all owe him a great debt for his work as Quartermaster and for his tireless commitment to keeping those winches running during the contests.
SATURDAY - Contest Director: George Hill Scorekeeper: Ed Anderson
The forecast for Saturday was still a bit threatening as of Friday morning but as the day moved on the forecast improved. It looked like we would get in a contest but that we might have intermittent stops for passing showers. We had 14 experts and one Sportsman flying.
Score was based on 3 or 4 man flight groups scored man on man with landings as a bonus. 1100 points max per round. Anderson, Ed Bradley Jr., David Broeski, Tom Glaab, Josh Glaab, Luke Hill, George Immanuel, David Lachowski, Michael Lucke, Steve Malkin, David Nicholson, Peter Pinho, John Richmond, Don Schlitzkus, Peter Walter, David
Saturday we flew 3 random rounds followed by 5 seeded rounds. With 15 pilots we had a problem with timer to pilot ratio. With 3 groups of 4 and one 3 man group we could only get two groups in the air with the adjacent 3 and a 4 man group. So the contest ran a little slower than if we had had more pilots available to time. But we got in a full 8 rounds with only one brief rain stop where the winches were covered and everyone went under cover. But that only lasted about 15 minutes. The rest of the day we flew under gray skies, light winds and a bit of mist here and there but no other delays.
Landing points were abundant as the breeze was light and smooth. The contest flowed smoothly with no line breaks, no lost planes, no broken planes and only one plane visiting a tree top just off the field and only for a brief period. Our thanks to all who ran the golf cart.
Round 1 - Dave Walter lead with Josh Glaab in second and Steve Lucke in third with Mike Lachowski in 4th by 1.99 points. Don Richmond, Tom Broeski, Dave Bradley Jr., Pete Nicholson and Peter Schlitzkus all had scores over 1000 points.
Round 2 - Dave W., Josh, Steve and Mike held positions with Dave B., Pete S, Tom, Don and Pete N. all over 2000 points to this stage.
Round 3 - Top 4 remained the same with Dave Bradley challenging from 5th place. Pete S and Pete N. both were over 3000 points and in contention to move up.
Round 4 - First seeded round. I think it was at the start of this round when we had our brief rain delay, but it gave the score keeper a few minutes to move to seeded and people time to work out timing assignments . At the end of the round Dave W. and Josh still held one and two but Mike L overtook Steve Lucke for third place with Dave B. only 19 points out of 4th place.
Round 5 - Dave W., Josh and Mike held top three with Dave Bradley moving into 4th. Still in contention were Pete S. in 5th, Pete N. in 6th and Steve Lucke in 7th, all over 5000 points.
Round 6 - Dave W held on to first by 20 points with Mike L moving up and Josh going to third. Pete S. held 4th and Steve Lucke 5th, all over 6000 points.
Round 7 - Josh took first, Mike L. held second and Pete S. moved into third with about 110 points spread from first to third. Dave B., Steve and Dave W. were in 4th to 6th with over 7000 points accumulated.
Round 8 - The final round of the day, started around 3:30 pm.
Final for Saturday Expert Josh Glaab with 8660.67 Mike Lachowski with 8604.99 Pete Schlitzkus with 8524.25 Dave Bradley Jr. was bubble boy at 8512.65 Final for Saturday Sportsman John Pinho took top score in the Sportsman class Despite a nervous forecast we had a great day of flying, good conditions, light winds which lead to high and abundant landing scores. Off to dinner with an eye to Sunday
Sunday - Contest Director: David Immanuel Scorekeeper: Ed Anderson
Sunday's weather report was for an overcast sky with moderate winds. We flew 3 random rounds and 3 seeded rounds. Again we had 15 pilots so we were only able to put two groups in the air when we had a 3 man followed by a 4 man group due to the number of pilots and timers needed. The wind speeds were moderate but they were a bit gusty which had its impact in the landing zone. Again, no lost planes, no broken planes, that I know of, and no tree top landings that I am aware of. We did have several line breaks in rapid succession which may have cost us a 7th round, but no one was at fault and the groups were restarted. Steve Lucke, with assistance from others, addressed the situations with amazing speed and talent.
There were no Sportsman flying Sunday. John Pinhoe volunteered to handle the golf cart all day. Thanks John.
Score was base on 3 or 4 man flight groups scored man on man using the C-Delta system. 1000 points max per round. Anderson, Ed Bradley Jr., David Broeski, Tom Burns, Christopher Glaab, Josh Glaab, Luke Hill, George Immanuel, David Lachowski, Michael Lucke, Steve Malkin, David Nicholson, Peter Richmond, Don Schlitzkus, Peter Walter, David
Round 1 - Josh Glaab, Steve Lucke, Luke Glaab and Dave Bradley all tied at 1000 points after the first round. David Walter, Chris Burns, Don Richmond, David Immanuel, Tom Broeski, George Hill, Pete Schlitzkus, Mike Lachowski, Ed Anderson and Pete Nicholson all were at 900 points or higher, in contention. Almost half the pilots missed the landing zone due to gusty conditions.
Round 2 - Josh had a perfect 2000 with Dave Walter and Chris Burns less than 10 points behind. Luke and Don were only a few points back with Pete S. and Mike above 1900 points and in contention. Almost half the pilots missed the landing zone due to gusty conditions.
Round 3 - Josh held first at 3000 points with Dave W. in second and Mike L. in third. Don, Pete and Luke were in close pursuit. Sudden gusts again plagued the landing zone keeping 8 pilots off the landing tape.
Round 4 - Josh continued in first with Dave W and Mike L. close behind. Don, Tom, Luke, George and Pete S. were close behind at less than 200 points off the lead score.
Round 5 - Josh and Mike held first and second. Don Richmond moved into third with Pete S., Luke and George close behind. The landing circle continued to be challenging for many.
Round 6 - Final round Started around 1:30 pm after a brief hold for line breaks.
Final standing: Mike Lachowski - 5,921 points out of a possible 6000 Pete Schlitzkus - 5,751 Luke Glaab - 5,730 George Hill - on the bubble with 5,635
Overall Two Day Champion - Mike Lachowski
