Long Island Silent Flyers ESL Contest June 23 and 24
I would just like to start off by saying that contests are successful when your club members show up to work all weekend to make the event run smoothly. There was food, beverages, donuts, coffee and a Motor scooter for retrieval. Thanks John. His son Sam rode it and did a great job for us on Saturday. Timers and volunteers helped on the launch line too. Thanks Gents. I must also give a special thanks to Rich Verriest, club treasurer and our scorekeeper at LISF ESL contests for his diligent negotiations with Nassau County and getting the grass cut for us in time. Thanks Rich. His trusty assistant Cathy was on hand to help with the scoring also. Saturday Thirty four pilots signed up and competed in the 2 day event. The majority of planes were composite. From Supras, the most popular to Explorers, X 2s, and Pike Perfects. The usual assortment of Mantis and home brew Supras were well represented. There were also two home built stretched Supras that flew very well. A few AVAs, a Windfree and a few ships I cannot name. There was also one lone wolf with an Aspire. We flew 7 rounds on Saturday. One round random and then 6 seeded rounds of ten minute duration. Landings were measured on a 100 inch tape . Winds were predicted from the NW at 6 to 10 mph. The lift was very strong at times with everyone getting their times, to a few rounds where some contestants were severely pounded. The late rounds had some gusty moments but I believe everyone survived without any planes damaged or lost in the woods. After the dust settled it was: 1st place Expert Mike Lachowski 1st place Sportsman William Lipscomb 2nd place Expert Tony Guide 2nd place Sportsman Anthony Procino 3rd place Expert Luis Bustamante 3rd place Sportsman Walter Adasczik Sunday Sunday was a repeat of Saturday getting in six rounds . One round of random 10 minutes. Then four rounds of 10 finishing off with a 12 minute round, all seeded . In the early groups most everyone got their times and some good landings. I believe in round 4 there were many pilots scratching to get their times, while rounds 5 and 6 saw some big lift roll in and many pilots rode it out to the next county to complete their tasks. One plane landed in the woods near the end of the contest but was recovered undamaged. After it was all over the results were 1st Place Expert John Hauff 1st place Sportsman Walter Adascsik 2nd place Expert Michael Lachowski 2nd place Sportsman Anthony Procino 3rd place Expert Luis Bustamante 3rd place Sportsman William Lipscomb
Grand Champion for the weekend Mike Lachowski
I would like to add that the motor bike drove about 10 miles each day retrieving shoots. Thats a lonely job without an FM radio. There were 442 launches on 4 ESL winches for the weekend and we did not break one line during the official event. A solenoid misfired but was instantly remedied by Tony Guide who seems to be the Triple A guy for winches . Thanks Tony. The equipment worked flawlessly.
Thank you all for your support LISF 2 September 22 and 23 2012
Respectably Frank Strommer Paul Bell
