FROM THE PRESIDENT - Ed Anderson
Can you hear it? Listen! That's the sound of launches being made, landings being perfected and the pilots of the Eastern Soaring League getting tuned up for another year of active competition. Do you have your planes ready to go? If not, the time to get ready is now. We are only a few days from our first ESL contest weekend.

FROM THE PRESIDENT – Ed Anderson
Can you hear it? Listen! That’s the sound of launches being made, landings being perfected and the pilots of the Eastern Soaring League getting tuned up for another year of active competition. Do you have your planes ready to go? If not, the time to get ready is now. We are only a few days from our first ESL contest weekend.
This year we have 30 contests arranged for your enjoyment. There will be 18 in our thermal duration division and 12 in our hand launched division. So there will be plenty of opportunities for people to participate and to improve their scores as the season progresses.
Naturally we will have awards each weekend and there will be top pilot awards for the season, but this year we will have one new award. This was voted on at the end of last season. The name, as entered in the ESL 2009 EOS minutes, is the ESL Soar-Meister. This will be a cross division award.
The Soar-Meister will be awarded based on the 4 best scores from HL and the 4 best scores from TD. If we assume that the pilot received all 100s, then the maximum score would be 800 and the ESL Soar-Meister will be awarded based on that score or the one closest to it. Now, if we should end up in a tie, then we will add one more HL score and one more TD score to the total and, hopefully that will break the tie.
The intention of this award is to recognize participation in both divisions and to recognize the pilot that has achieved a level of excellence in both divisions. Some of us are good at one or the other style of flying, but how many are really good at both? This should be interesting!
I hope you are excited about the new season. I know I am.
