Good evening!
The ESL's 2008 Unlimited Soaring season kicked-off with the Tidewater Model Soaring Society ESL Spring Challeng contest with a great weekend of MOM flying on 5/17 and 5/18. The weather cooperated very nicely. Sunshine both days, temps in the 70s. Some wind in the afternoon of both days, some exciting wind to wrap up the contest with on Sunday (15-25).
El Presidente' (Tony Guide) was on hand to throw-out the first sailplane. We flew 7 rounds of MOM with 17 pilots on Saturday and were able to get off the field by 5:30. Sportsflyers and Experts were mixed together randomly in the groups. Some very intense aerial battles broke out and the MOM mood was really kicking. FAI tapes were used with 1-pt increments for the last 2 meters. Most of the fleet on hand were Supras, but there were many Pike Perfects, a Shadow, Tsunami, Soveriegn, Bird of Time, Insanity (in Zebra stripes) an Esteem, a pair of Icons, and even a Waco Millenium. On Saturday, we normalized the flight times only and then added the landing scores. The LSF-Ladder event had 6 contestants with several LSF L-1 tasks being completed. This was a nice complementary event to the MOM and the LSF-Ladder group was brewing-up a good competition of their own.
Dick Proseus did well with his Supra, but couldn't catch Josh. Tom Broeski also flew a Supra (sometimes a fluttering Supra). Letting up on the launch seemed to cure Tom's flutter issue. Neal Huffman (also flying a Supra) took the honors in Sportsflyer class and won 2 rounds (which is great considering that we flew Experts and Sportsflyers together). We should look out for Neal, he is definitely improving, and quickly!
In the LSF-Ladder event we had 6 competitors. Peter Braswell made a re-apperance after being absent for many years. It was great to see him again. Mark Sedlack flew the ladder event but was having issues with popping off. One "feature" of the LSF-Ladder event was that popoffs no longer matter, except for the folks in the winch area who were dodging aircraft! Josh Glaab Jr flew his Piccachu very nicely as was about to sky it out when its' tail failed on launch. The aircraft assembler was suitably admonished (Daddy). Fortunately, there was a golf-cart to be driven!
Lunch was provided both days by Greg Blazey who had a wonderful setup of box lunches for all. This helped us to get through with lunch and keep flying! Many thanks Greg!
We adjourned to the deck at Smithfield Station on the Pagan river. Really a nice place overlooking the river and the marina. A lot of high-quality Apres' soaring broke-out.

On Sunday, we mixed it up and normalized the flight times AND the landings to keep flyers on their toes. Several folks couldn't come back for Sunday's event. However, we did very well again with 13 flyers and completed 6 rounds before 1:30pm and got people on the road fairly early. One thing that did help was that several folks were on-hand to time, like Trish Glaab (yes, even Trish), VanDover, and John Moody. They really helped move the contest along! That was a lesson-learned for other small MOM contests. Volunteer timers are VERY valuable!
Josh Sr. was able to build upon Saturday's victory and win Sunday's event. However, Lenny put a 200 pt hurtin on him in round 3 by flying like a Californian at the right time. Josh did pay Lenny back, with dividends ;-). Tony Guide had an encounter with a Bull, but some patience got his Pike Perfect back without a scratch (or any cow dung) on it ;-). Reid Roberts flew a great set of flights on Sunday and won Sportsflyer. He also racked-up a bunch of advancement points and could have been third in Expert class. Way to go Reid (move him up, move him up)! Luke Glaab was the only flyer in the LSF-Ladder event and took top-honors.

Here is Josh Jr on approach with his Piccachu (AKA Soveriegn). Aircraft was equipped with bomb-rack and Piccachu noise maker. Unfortunate structural failure on Saturday (v-tail fell off on launch). Daddy has instructions to rebuild to like-new (Oh boy!), well better than new ;-)

Bill Mims gets ready to launch his Spirit in Novice LSF-Ladder class. In case you can't read Bill's shirt, it says "It ain't a sport until someone gets hit". Bill didn't hit anyone, with the Spirit or anything else, but he did have a great time competing with Sean K and getting some LSF L-1 tasks completed. Bill also helped score for our event.

The TMSS guys put a huge amount of work into their contest, which made it an very enjoyable and very competitive event. And I'm not saying that just because I beat Luis on both days. :-)
Josh, Lenny, Reid, Dave and as well as a bunch of other TMSS members were perfect hosts and made everybody feel like they were at their home field. I'm looking forward to flying in their contest mext year.
BTW: I stayed at the Econo Lodge in Carrolton which is about 10 minutes from the TMSS field. The room was clean and well taken care of and it cost about $84 a night. I would stay there again for next year's contest. |
