Welcome to the Eastern Soaring League's Novice Lounge.
My name is Ed Anderson, though I am probably better known as aeajr on the various forums. I will be your host and moderator for this forum.
The goal of the Novice Lounge is to provide new and prospective glider and sailplane pilots with a place to come to find good information, to ask questions and to share flying experiences. In other words to talk with other new pilots and with experienced pilots about the fun and the wonder of thermal duration soaring.
We will discuss planes that are launched via hi-starts and winches and we will talk about planes that are launched by hand. Anything that is intended to ride the thermals and soar with the hawks is open for discussion here.
I will be posting articles I have written on the subject, but this is not about me, it is about you. So if you are an accomplished pilot and you have knowledge and talent to share, please, post your articles, your tip sheets or your soaring secrets. If you have a plane you just built, or one you recommend to new flyers, tell us about it. Post a build thread or just tell us why you like it.
New pilots, if you are having problems, post a question. The only dumb questions are the ones you don't ask. If something is standing between you and the fun and adventure of soaring, let us help you knock down that barrier.
And, if you hang around here enough, you are bound to learn about the real fun of thermal duration competitions. The Eastern Soaring League is like a traveling sports league. We help organize hand launch and winch launch thermal duration competitions up and down the Eastern part of the United States. However pilots from all over North America, or from anywhere in the world, are welcome to come join us in our pursuit of the invisible lift.
You can fly in one event, perhaps at your local club's field, or you can travel to many events and have fun meeting new people and sharing the fun. Glider guiders tend to be very friendly people.
You can certainly enjoy a lifetime of lazy Sunday afternoon flying and have a great time. But let me tell you, when you gather with other flyers for some friendly competition, the good times really start to roll. You will meet great people, you will learn a ton and you will become a better flyer.
You know, bouncing that ball in the driveway and shooting hoops by yourself is OK, but after a while, wouldn't it be fun to have some 3 on 3? Well that is how it is with thermal duration competitions. Some of us will become champions and some of us will just have the time of our life. But its all good.
Even if you never win a contest, even if you never become a world class pilot, I promise you that flying in the Eastern Soaring League competitions will take you to the next level of fun. But there is no rush.
Even if you never enter one of the ESL contests, you are welcome here, at the Novice Lounge.
Set a spell and let's talk gliders.
"Catch any good lift lately? Tell us about it!
