6/27/06 - Saturday and Sunday June 10 & 11th, Silent Knights held another one of their famous “Windy City” contests:. WNW winds steadily above 15 and gusting to over 20 were the norm this weekend. Some claim the wind was brought in by Gordy Stahl, while others claim a less complimentary direct effect.
Tasks were seven minute duration with runway landings.
Despite the heavy winds and a few start-up problems with retriever lines being blown into the trees, remarkably few problems were encountered. The “Big Pond” field generated its share of usable lift throughout the weekend. There were a few arboreal landings but all were retrievable. No one landed out, thanks in part to the “no fly zone” (over the housing development) being directly downwind).
Turbulent winds made landings a true test of skill, and maybe a little of luck. Mike Lachowski dominated both days with his supernatural ability to squeeze lift from some impossible situations. His overall score for the two-day event lead nearest competitor Gordy Stahl by an even one thousand points.
