06/23/05 - Twenty contestants took the field Saturday, June 11, under the direction of CD John Jenks, for a go at 8 rounds at Big Pond Field. The day was hot, but the lift offered compensation for the heat, as there were many flights within a second or two of the target 8 minutes. After lunch the lift petered out a bit, but it was a good day for flying.

In Expert class, Phil Barnes grabbed the lead on round 1 Saturday, and never gave it up. John Jenks was a threat through round 6, but couldn’t find the lift on round 7, and missed his landing. Mike Lachowski’s consistency landed him in second for the day, followed by Joe Melchiorre in third and John Jenks in fourth.

In Sportsman class Chuck Robinett and Frank Strommer battled it out for the first two places, with the lead switching back and forth until Chuck finally prevailed in first place by the end of round 8. Bob Cherry and George Hill took third and fourth, respectively.

Charlie Reeve displayed his talent as a chef, grilling hamburgers and bratwurst during lunch break. Charlie’s offerings were supplemented with salad and goodies provided by Ellen Derrico, Bev Groft and Jan DeGroodt.

Sunday gave us a bit of a break in the heat, and the lift prevailed again. A strengthening breeze as the day wore on resulted in a few land-outs, when pilots too far downwind couldn’t make it back. John Jenks again served as CD in his inimitable style, and set the task again at 8 minute rounds but 6 rounds total. The field of contestants totaled 18.

Among the Experts, Paul Bell mounted a challenge to Phil Barnes, took the lead in round 4 and held it to the finish. Phil was second. Jerry Ziegenfuse pulled in at third, and Bill Groft was fourth.

In the Sportman class, Chuck Robinett was again at the top at the end of the day, and Terry Lisansky edged out Frank Strommer for second. Fourth place went to Gerald Terfloth. George Hill was a contender until his wing separated from the fuse on the launch for round 4. That was the only breakage for the two days of flying.

Overall winner for the two days was – you guessed it – Phil Barnes.

Certificates were awarded to fourth place in both Expert and Sportsman class for each of the two days.

Charlie Reeve again manned the grill, and Ellen, Bev and Jan provided the side dishes for lunch. This time, Charlie added barbequed chicken to the menu. Beats subs and hoagies, for sure!

We at SKSS thank all who participated as contestants as well as our guys and gals who were helpers for this successful outing at beautiful Big Pond Field. And thanks to Dick duPont for providing an extra grooming of the field in preparation for the contest. Special thanks to John Jenks who happily agreed to CD both days. Happy landings going forward!
